Mindfulness 101

The 5-Minute MeditatorThis book defines mindfulness and meditation (no, they are not the same) and explains how to practise them. It looks at our vernacular usage of the word ‘mindful’; the greatly expanded psychological usage; and the original Buddhist meaning. Each of these has its own special limitations and strengths.

This book argues that the Buddha’s DIY text, The Foundations of Mindfulness, is still the most systematic and lucid explanation of mindfulness available to us. Furthermore, its highly practical techniques can be easily extracted from their monastic context, and adapted to our very different purposes. This book includes a translation of this little known text.

Learn to ‘be present’, to be more sensual and just ‘do what you are doing’. Since short meditations naturally grow into longer ones when circumstances allow, this book is an excellent introduction to meditation itself.

This leads to inner balance and self-understanding, and the kind of deep, intelligent thought that is  the true reward of meditation.

This book is now out of print, but is readily available through the library service. The earlier edition can still be purchased locally under the title of 'How Meditation Heals' through Piatkus Books (UK), or Ulysses Press (USA). This book is now out of print, but you are still likely to find copies around. It is readily available through the library service. The book was revised four times since 1990, and was also published under the title Teach Yourself to Meditate by Simon and Schuster Australia, and Piatkus Books UK. It has now been translated into at least 10 languages and sold about 150,000 copies worldwide. Until recently it was the instruction manual used at Perth Meditation Centre, but it has now been superceded by The 5-Minute Meditator and the How to Meditate CDs above.
